Lenny Kaye Discusses Nuggets

Lenny Kaye on the Nuggets LP, released 40 years ago:  "And of course the bottom line is that all of these are great songs. They're just not genre pieces. There has been a lot of archaeological dig in the world of garage since Nuggets. But to me, what made the album initially attractive beyond any musical philosophizing was the fact that every one of these songs were great songs beyond genre."

Hat tip: Allen Larmin.

While I haven't listened to this album in a long time, it absolutely was a catalyst to check out the American reaction to the Stones, Kinks, Them, Pretty Things, etc. for me. I was amazed upon the first listen - realizing that attitude carries the day over proficiency every time.

In my world, a top 25 album of all time.

Interesting article and absolutely great record. But "an immediate success"? My experience was that it was solely a cult success at the time, rather like the tracks it contains; I bought my copy as a cut-out in 1980. Can someone more knowledgeable than me weigh in on this?
